GIMP for Unix-like systems

It's very likely your Unix-like system such as a GNU/Linux distribution already comes with a GIMP package. It is a preferred method of installing GIMP, as the distribution maintainers take care of all the dependencies and bug fix updates. Please note that many distros decide to pin a specific version of GIMP to their releases.

Ubuntu or Debian users can run apt-get install gimp to install GIMP. Ubuntu users may also install GIMP from Software Centre, this includes recent GIMP versions from PPAs.

SUSE users can install GIMP by running yast -i gimp or zypper in gimp, depending on the distribution version.

Similarly to the above, Fedora users can install GIMP by running yum install gimp.

Mandriva Linux users can install GIMP by running urpmi gimp.

GIMP is also available for the BSD family of systems such as FreeBSD and OpenBSD.

GIMP can run on Solaris.

Since the 2.8.2 version GIMP runs on OSX natively. No X11 environment is required.

Cases are dribbling in that show that one customer-centric element of the Altoona Water Authority's $6.6 million meter automation and replacement project is working.

As a corollary to its automation of readings, the authority is notified when a residential customer's usage never drops below a gallon per hour for 48 consecutive hours, according to authority billing director Ron Becher.

That indicates a leak, and when it happens, the authority notifies the customer, who can then check and have the leak repaired.

It takes three days between the time a leak begins and the notifications go out, he said.

Before meter automation, it took 45 days, as the authority only read meters once in 30 days, then had to work through the billing process before high-usage for one customer would come to the attention of officials, who could then notify the customer, Becher said.

The improvement is "quite huge," Becher told the board last week.

One case - a vacant building in a shopping center - indicates the potential value.

The authority received an alert, notified the shopping center office, and the center repaired a pipe that had frozen and burst.

Enough water had leaked to generate a bill of $1,200.

Had the same thing happened before automation, the loss would have required an additional zero - $12,000, Becher said.

SALINEVILLE - The non-replacement of a departing police officer caused some friction Tuesday evening between the mayor, village council and the police department.

Words were exchanged during the village council meeting after Mayor Mary Smith decided not to immediately hire a replacement for Officer Christopher Bruno, who resigned from the department this week.

"We tried to hire another officer, but the mayor put the kibosh on that as usual," Councilman Brian Zaverl said.

Smith said she was unaware there was an opening at the time until four days prior to the meeting when fiscal officer Patti Gibson texted Smith regarding an application received for a police officer's position. Smith also explained that she was trying not to violate an ordinance which designates how many officers are to be hired.

"First question I had was 'Do we have room on the roster?' You cannot exceed that ordinance, or you're in violation of breaking your own law," Smith said. "Second thing is we have had financial difficulties for years in the village. I do not know where we are financially in the police department. We have a budget we have to stick with. Every week, or quite often, the police department is getting overtime, and I do not see that."

One major concern among council and the police department was a $9,000 grant Police Chief Andy Straley received earlier this month, which would help add another officer to the force.

According to the conditions of the grant, if an officer was not hired by March 1, the village would lose out on the grant. Smith's decision, however, stood which disappointed the council and Straley.

"He worked and got us a grant," council president Sally Keating said. "If we don't get this guy hired, then we're going to lose that grant."

"The police chief told her that we have to get somebody in there or we'll have to pay a penalty," Zaverl said. "It didn't seem to phase her."

Smith said that at the Feb. 2 meeting when the grant was handed to the fiscal officer, she asked Straley if there were any conditions to the grant and was told no.
