Work was slated to begin Monday on window replacement at the Sandwich Public Library.

The Friends of the Sandwich Public Library said they will use a generous bequest from the Silks Family to help update the older library windows that are clouded by condensation and plagued by leaking seals.

SPL Director Joanne Lamothe said 25 windows require new glass and seal replacements to properly maintain their functionality. The start of work depends on the weather.

The project will ensure the proper interior air quality conditions necessary for the preservation of materials. In addition, The Friends realized the repairs are needed in light of the upcoming heating/ventilation/air conditioning project that at this point remains in a design phase.

Lamothe said window work would unfold first in the librarys public areas. She said some areas may have to be cordoned off for safetys sake; perhaps in the teen reading area.

The library opened for business in 1911. It is considered an historic structure. Additions went on in 1964 and 1984. Over the decades, however, the windows silica gel became saturated and condensation problems intensified.

The window project should be completed this month, Lamothe said.

The Friends is a certified non-profit group. It raises fund for programming, copiers and printers, equipment, museum passes, furniture, interior and exterior upgrades; and more.

Donations and bequests are welcomed to improve support efforts. For details, visit http://www.sandwichpubliclibrary.com.
