A large piece of metal falling from the Granville Street Bridge took out the rear window of a car parked on Granville Island in May, the second such incident to come to light in the past week.

It was confirmed last week that another piece of metal fell from the bridge in September onto the roof of a restaurant.

On Friday, tour guide Andrew Louie said nobody was hurt when the piece fell on his vehicle in the parking lot beside Edible Canada Bistro.

A photograph provided by Louie shows a piece of metal on his trunk and the entire rear window destroyed, while a police officer surveys the damage.

A piece of metal came straight down, Louie said of the incident, which happened at about 1 p.m. when his car was empty. If it hit somebody, that thing would have just killed them. You have 10 million people on Granville Island every year. It was a sunny day and there would have been a lot of people on the island. Wouldnt you want to protect the safety of the public?

Vancouver police confirmed that they have an incident report related to a piece of metal falling from the bridge onto a parked and unoccupied car on Granville Island.

Louie said his insurance company made a claim with the City of Vancouver but the city has not taken responsibility. On Sunday, a city spokeswoman, who refused to be named, couldnt confirm whether city staff were aware of the incident with Louies car.

Meanwhile, city crews have been busy repairing dozens of welds on the Granville Street Bridge after a large piece of metal fell onto the roof of a Granville Island restaurant last month. Peter Judd, the citys head of engineering, said last week in an emailed statement that the work is simply preventive maintenance and there was no danger to the public of any other metal falling from the bridge.

The restaurants landlord said a metal piece that fell Sept. 18 onto Sandbar Seafood Restaurant weighed more than 20 kilograms and could easily have killed someone if it had fallen on a pedestrian.
