Northbrook board votes to lift tree removal ban

NORTHBROOK The Northbrook Village Board on Tuesday lifted the temporary tree removal ban at 8 Hickory Lane, despite the continued appeal of neighbors to save trees on the wooded site from being cut down.

The village had issued the ban after neighbors asked the public works committee to review the staffs decision to issue a permit allowing 53 trees to be destroyed.

The committee Village Trustees Todd Heller, A.C. Buehler and Robert Israel met Dec. 13 during an emergency session, deciding that the staff had acted appropriately based on the ordinance governing the issue.

The committee then sent its recommendation to the board, which voted unanimously that the staff followed village code in issuing Michael and Debbie Rude, the new owners of the wooded one-acre site, a permit for tree removal.

However, Trustee James Karagianis, acting as president pro tem in the absence of Village President Sandra Frum, noted that the tree preservation ordinance should probably be examined in the near future.

It probably is not the best it could be, he added.
