THE first stage of the cenotaph relocation plan occurred with the removal of the tree that has long adorned the lawns of the Mount Isa Civic Centre this week.

With a unanimous decision by the Mount Isa City Council and the Mount Isa RSL to relocate the cenotaph in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove, the plan to create a new memorial in the prominent CBD space was set in motion.

The trees removal and relocation comes as plans for the 2015 Anzac Day ceremony, including brand new cenotaph, commence.

Mayor Tony McGrady said the removal of the tree marked the beginning of an exciting project that aimed to best recognise and honour war heroes from throughout the region and the nation.

The existing tree has been relocated to the Mount Isa City Council nursery, where it will be cared for and nurtured, he said.

The tree will eventually be replanted at its new home within the Mount Isa Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

The trees removal makes way for the new memorial that will feature an eternal flame, distinct landscaping and full lighting which will allow the people of Mount Isa to remember fallen heroes at any time of the day.

Anzac Day 2015 in Mount Isa is set to be an unforgettable ceremony, with plans by the Mount Isa City Council and the Mount Isa RSL sub-branch currently underway.
