With the help of Rockville-based multiple-listing service MRIS, we compiled a list of some of the most expensive houses for sale in the Washington area.

The properties range from a $12.9million chateau set in the woods of McLean to a $3.99million estate in Great Falls modeled on Shirley Plantation on the James River. Other properties on the list include a 19th-century mansion and a sleek contemporary condo that is under construction.
