CONYERS Rockdale County Fire-Rescue is crediting a sprinkler system with containing a blaze that broke out early Thursday morning at 4D Printing Inc. on Irwin Bridge Road.

According to RCFR, firefighters were called to the structure fire at 1007 Irwin Bridge Road NW at about 1:15 a.m. where they found moderate smoke coming from the side of the building. The sprinkler system had been activated, and when firefighters entered the structure, they found that the fire was completely contained by the sprinkler system. Firefighters put more water on the smoldering print press unit and ventilated the building.

According to a press release from RCFR public information officer George Cox, the sprinkler system had recently been serviced and did what it was designed to do. Without activation of the sprinkler system, Cox said that the fire could have easily spread throughout the 30,000-square-foot business and consumed the building.

According to Cox, sprinkler systems are widely used in commercial and multi-family structures based on codes. However, sprinkler systems are gaining popularity in residential structures because of their effectiveness. Cox stated that sprinkler systems are designed to activate early in a real fire responding to heat, not smoke and do not activate in a non-fire situation. Each sprinkler reacts only to the fire conditions in its area, resulting in less water release than would occur if the fire department had to suppress the fire because later action means more fire, which means more water is needed.
