No injuries in small fire at Emerson Manor

The sprinkler system managed to put out a fire in a fifth-floor room at Emerson Manor that brought firefighters out to the apartment building Thursday morning. No injuries were reported.

The Hoquiam Fire Department responded at about 10:40 a.m. to reports of smoke in the building. Firefighters found thick smoke on the fifth floor, but the sprinkler system put the fire itself out, Capt. Jerry Gwin said.

Some residents were not able to evacuate because of mobility issues, but they were able to shelter in place with the help of firefighters because there was no danger of the fire spreading, Gwin said.

Each one of these rooms is like a steel vault, he said.

No one was in the room at the time of the fire, and its cause is not yet clear. Many residents were still waiting in the lobby area around noon as firefighters worked to shut off the sprinkler system.

Nine responded from Hoquiam, including Chief Paul Dean, and two came from the Aberdeen Fire Department to help.
