Coastal Bridge Construction workers resurface the Tiger Drive Bridge Friday. The bridge project is nearing completion.

The new Tiger Drive Bridge in Thibodaux is expected to open to the public more than a year after the old bridge closed.

The bridge replacement should be complete at the end of next week or beginning of the following week, project manager Devon Overall said Thursday.

The two-lane crossing is being replaced with a three-lane bridge that will allow drivers to make left turns onto St. Mary Street and La. 308 without slowing traffic.

Contractors were finishing laying asphalt on the bridge Friday. All that remains, Overall said, is to add guardrails and siding, stripe the road and set up rights of way.

If weather permits, the project should be finishing up by next Friday, he said.

The bridge closed Sept. 3 last year to allow Baton Rouge-based Coastal Bridge Construction to begin work.

City Council members approved the project in June of last year because of traffic-flow problems. While residents initially viewed the project as a necessary inconvenience, some had grown frustrated over the delays in the project.

Originally expected to be complete by June, crews have been delayed by weather and the delivery of pilings.
