Local and state officials are working toward building a $1 million community center in the Mechanicville area of Houma.

The project cant move forward until the State Bond Commission decides whether to include $725,000 in state money for the center in this fiscal years projects.

But Terrebonne Parish Councilman John Navy said he hopes construction will begin before the end of the year. Its planned to be next to the Mechanicville Gym on Senator Street.

Thibodaux-based architect Duplantis Design Group and Houma native Kyle Domingue did preliminary designs for the center free of charge.

At a community meeting last September, Domingue said the design would incorporate pre-fabricated metal siding on the exterior and have a breezeway connecting the center and the gymnasium.

Preliminary designs feature three classrooms and a large community gathering space. This construction is perfect for the tutoring, mentoring and etiquette programs, Navy said.

We want to give these kids more to do than just play basketball, Navy said.

Also part of the project is the continued renovation of the Mechanicville Gym.

Built in 1975, no renovation or major repair work went into the gym until just prior to last years community center talks. The building was renovated thanks to the Sheriffs Offices trusty work program.
