George Lucas wanted to direct Episode VII

George Lucas has revealed that he originally wanted to direct the new Star Wars sequel.

The filmmaker told USA Today that, prior to Disneys acquisition of LucasFilm in 2012, he was planning a seventh Star Wars film for release in May 2015. He later decided to step away from the series, after realising that overseeing a new trilogy would require a commitment of at least 10 years.

Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) is the new screenwriter for Godzilla director Gareth Edwards's forthcoming stand-alone Star Wars spin-off, according to the latest rumours. It was recently announced that screenwriter Gary Whitta (After Earth) had left the project.
