Shares of Netflix (NFLX) fell on Tuesday after the streaming media company posted fewer-than-expected net subscriber additions for the 2017 first quarter, as well as weak earnings guidance for the second quarter.

In the first quarter, the company added 4.95 million subscribers, lower than the company's own forecastfor 5.2 million subscriber additions and also lower than the consensus analyst estimates for 5.3 million net subscriber additions.

In the U.S., Netflix added 1.42 million subscribers, while outside the U.S., the company added 3.53 million subscribers.The company now has almost 99 million subscribers worldwide.For the first half of 2017, Netflix is expecting to add 8.15 million subscribers, vs. 8.42 million added in the first half of 2016.

For the second quarter, Netflix forecast additions of 600,000 U.S. and 2.6 million international subs, better than consensus estimates for 373,000 U.S. and 2.17 million international adds. But its EPS guidance of $0.15 was below a $0.24 consensus estimate.

On Tuesday afternoon, Netflix shares were down 2.2% to $144.05.
