The 68-year-old actress is set to "take on a lead role" in the second series of the hit ITV1 drama, and according to ITV director of drama Steve November, Rampling is "the first of some exciting additions to the ensemble for the new series".

The mother-of-three is well-known for her roles in Sixties films such as 'Georgy Girl', as well as her more recent appearances in costume drama 'The Duchess' and TV series 'Dexter'.

Broadchurch creator, Chris Chibnall has confessed it has "been agony" keeping the news secret.
