Ryan Watts of Jurin Roofing Services was recently awarded the Liberty Mutual Insurance Community Service and Public Education Firemark Award for his volunteer work as lieutenant for the Milford Township Fire Department located in Milford Township, PA.

The Liberty Mutual Firemark Award is presented annually to U.S. firefighters who best represent their communities through courageous valor and who best demonstrate the firefighters selfless spirit. The award takes its name from the firemark, a leaden plate in the form of a Phoenix rising from the ashes, which American fire offices in the 18th and 19th centuries used to mark all the houses they insured. The firemark stood as a guarantee to all fire brigades that the insurance company that insured the house in question would reward them for extinguishing a fire on the premises.

Ryan was nominated for this award for his everyday self-sacrifice and tireless efforts to protect and promote public safety in his community. His love of helping people has carried through since his childhood. I can remember watching the fire trucks in the parades as a kid and thinking about how much I wanted to be a fireman and help people when I grew up. Ryan has now been a volunteer fire fighter for 16 years. He also helps the community in many other ways as a firefighter by talking with children at schools about fire safety and prevention, helping run fundraisers, and helping bring the community together by helping to run fairs and street carnivals during the summer.

Evan Lesh, fellow firefighter, nominated Ryan for this award in response to his endless efforts to maintain a safe fire station environment and his outstanding community outreach involvement, most recently the Firefighter Olympics. "At the annual firefighter Olympics, Ryan Watts and his young son made the cover of the local newspaper. He and his son are both dressed in firefighters bunker gear, and his son plans to be a firefighter just like his dad. Ryan works hard doing fire prevention around the station organizing the fire prevention programs for some time, and deserves an award without a doubt in my mind. Also, the Milford Township Fire Department took home first place in the competition that day.

Ryan Watts will be heading to Las Vegas at the end of February for the National Roofing Contractors Association 2014 Expo where he will be formally presented with his MVP Award from the Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress.
