TOLEDO -- Warmer temperatures and sunshine are leading to a big melt of snow and ice. But, cooler overnight temperaturesSaturday night could lead to ice dams possibly requiring costly repairs to your roof.

"A little bit of preventative maintenance could save you a lot of hassle," explains Jaime Wietrzykowski, owner of 4 Guys and a Roof.

Warmer weather is leading to a big melt of snow and ice frozen in place on the roofs of many homes. But the melt could also lead to ice dams damaging your home.

An ice dam is a build up of ice.Itstarts at the bottom of the roof at the gutter and it builds up inside the gutter and starts backing up underneath the roof. The water has nowhere to go, and seeps into the house.

This winter has keptWietrzykowski very busy. He advises homeowners to call a professional unlessthey have a snow rake with a long handle,"I tell homeowners, please do not get on the roofs, it's just too dangerous. What looks like it could be a simple removal, could end up in a broken hip very easily."

He also recommends homeowners do their homework on companies that do snow and ice removal work and check to make sure they're certified for the work they're being hired for.
