Roofing company spills sealant into storm drains in Naples

NAPLES, Fla.- Sanitation crews are cleaning up a sealant that leaked into storm drains, that eventually lead to the Gordan River.

A roofing company was putting a sealant on the roof of the Suncoast Credit Union on North Horseshoe Drive on Tuesday, when rains came and washed it down into the storm drains. According to harbormaster Roger Jacobsen, the sealant was an acryllic paint that should not be placed into any of our water systems.

The bank manager said officials from Tidwells Urethane Foam Service are cleaning up the pollutant. Two vacuum trucks have already sucked up 5,000 gallons of the chemical to prevent it from going any further on into the water system.

The Naples code enforcement manager said the sealant in the water will not burn you or cause breathing problems, but that residents would not want to ingest it or swim in it. The manager said the city code is very clear that nothing but rain water should go into the storm drains.

The contractor could face fines, but right now, the focus is on getting the sealant cleaned up and preventing it from making its way to the Naples Bay.
