Authorities raided a location on Chelsea overnight, resulting in the discovery of a large amount of stolen roofing materials.

At least 10 people were takeninto custody at the time and four eventually were arrested.

Earle Farrell, spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, said deputies were on the scene in the 4200 block late Thursday night and remained through this morning.

Assistant Chief Deputy Mark Dunbar said it could take as many as three flatbeds trailers to haul away the materials found at the address.

"I promise there was is $1 million worth of roofing materials back there," Dunbar said. "It was kind of like the Home Depot of roofing materials."

Dunbar said the case started in Arlington where home building is on the rise. With the increase in building, thefts will follow, including four last week.

With that in mind, authorities told builders to let them know when materials would arrive at their site. Deputies ran surveillance in the area, and Thursday evening spotted a truck back up to a house under construction. The occupantsloaded two pallets of roofing materials.

Dunbar said the truck drove directly to the Chelsea address near Interstate 40, leading to the raid at the address.

"The whole back yard was set up like a warehouse," Dunbar said.
