LAKE BLUFF, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A roofing contractor in north suburban Lake Bluff has been charged with theft for allegedly taking a $9,000 deposit for a job he never did.

Robert J. Madro, 57, entered into a contract in May 2014 to replace the roof of a home in the 1100 block of Foster Avenue in Lake Bluff, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff's office. Madro is the owner of Timberline Exteriors at 904 Jenkisson Ave.

When the job had not begun by August 2014, the homeowner requested that Madro return the $9,000 deposit, the sheriff's office said.

The request was unsuccessful, and the homeowner filed a report with the sheriff's office in January in an effort to recover the deposit.

An arrest warrant was issued for Madro for Class 3 felony theft by deception, the sheriff's office said. He surrendered to detectives in Waukegan on Thursday.

Madro was released on a $50,000 recognizance bond and is due back in court Feb. 2, the sheriff's office said.
