Flames ripped through a roofing business in the Brookline area on Thursday morning.

Crews initially thought they were being dispatched to a single-family home in the 2900 block of Farm Road 115. When they got there, however, they discovered it was a house that had actually been converted into a business.

"The building was being used by Teague's Roofing," Fire Captain Darren Campbell told KTTS News. "We don't believe anyone was living in it."

Officials had reported hearing some small explosions. Campbell said they were fortunate some of the hazardous material didn't make matters worse. "We believe the noises we heard were caused by some of the roofing supplies and other items. We had a propane tank that didn't become an issue, but it easily could have."

Campbell said he's not sure what caused the fire and the building appears to be a total loss.

Brookline received assistance from a number of agencies including Battlefield, Republic, Springfield, and Willard.
