The Westwood Regional Board of Education awarded a contract to replace three school roofs during its June 12 meeting.

The district will pay a total of $493,350 to Clifton & Clark, Inc., which submitted the lower of two bids received for the work.

The projects include roof replacement at Westwood Regional Middle School for $161,650, roof replacement at Brookside Elementary for $131,850 and roof replacement at George Elementary for $199,850.

The board has previously rejected three bids for the projects after Clifton & Clark submitted one which was "materially defective" and the other bidders "substantially exceed[ed] the cost estimates" according to district records.

The board also voted last month to approve a $1,497,000 contract with Integrity Roofing, Inc. for a roof replacement project at Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School. The district received three bids for that project.

Forty percent of the projects' costs will be covered by a Regular Operating District (ROD) grant from the state Department of Education. The remaining 60 percent will be covered by the district with money from its capital improvement fund.

The state also offered the district an ROD grant for a project to replace the high school facade. Board of Education President Roberta Hanlon said officials plan to undergo that work next summer.
