Bid accepted for High School roof work

The Shelbyville School Board approved the recommendation by the districts architect for the roofing project on the high school during its regular meeting February 20.

Bid opening was held February 14 with nine bids submitted. The project include roof replacement on the high school gym and auditorium.

The districts architect Bill VanDusen of Allied Design Consultants told the board that if defects were revealed, the 10 percent contingency would be in the Life Safety contract.

This is a 1980s roofing. Its time to replace it and the timing was good for competitive bids, VanDusen said.

The low bid was Top Quality Roofing Company of Mt. Zion at $269,000. Estimated cost was $338,000. The board approved and signed the contract to get the project started. Work is expected to start after school is out June 2 with an anticipated completion date of August 15.

In administrative reports, Superintendent Denise Bence noted that nine snow days have been declared so three of the days will be submitted to the state as act of God days.

She reported that public forums, radio spots, and TV interviews are being used to inform the public on the Shelby County sales tax referendum.

Bence added that she will be applying for a $50,000 maintenance grant, which will require a matching $50,000 from the districts funds, and recommended that, if awarded, the money be used for replacing exterior doors. Estimated cost for all doors is $140,000. The board approved the application.

Bence also reported that damage from the storm earlier that day tore the roof off the press box, pushed the band trailer into the concession stand, damaging the roof of the stand; blew out a window in the high school, and damaged bleachers at the baseball field north of Moulton school. She added that she has already contacted the insurance company, noting that premiums went up after the claim on the Main Street School chimney that was damaged by lightning a few years ago.

Moulton Middle School principal Russ Tomblin noted that ISAT testing will be held the first week of March. He added that as a result of last years test results that Shelbyville ranked 5th out of 40 area schools.
