The rear end of a compact SUV dangled over a retaining wall with the driver trapped inside early Friday after it was struck by a truck traveling the wrong way on the U.S. Highway 52 Connector, police said.

The suspect, who fled the scene on foot, was found at a hotel.

Benjamin L. Dodson, 30, of Wagner was charged Friday with felony DUI after his Ford F-150 collided with the Honda CRV when he was driving westbound in the eastbound lane of the connector, North Charleston police said.

The driver of the Honda, Arkelle D. Grant, was pinned in the vehicle and had to be freed. He was treated at a hospital for a fractured pelvis and leg and a dislocated hip, police said.

When police arrived at 2:30 a.m., the rear end of the Honda was hanging over a retaining wall. The pickup truck was there but the driver had fled, police said.

A county rescue worker advised that he recognized the truck and knew the owner. Inside the truck, officers found a key holder from the Sleep Inn Hotel. Officers went to the hotel, where they were advised that no one was registered under that name. They searched for Dodson for the next four hours.

At 6:45 a.m., a hotel clerk called police to advise that Dodson was checking into a room there.

When officers arrived, Dodson told them he did not remember the wreck. His pants were torn and covered with blood, he smelled of alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot, police said.

Dodson was taken to a hospital to be checked out by a doctor and then transported and booked into the Charleston County jail.
