GASTONIA, N.C. -- A retaining wall in Gastonia is sagging after a large swath of the ground beneath it gave way.

Two stores -- a AAA Car Care Center and a Sprint store -- were ordered closed by Gastonia officials out of concern the situation could worsen.

The stores are located in a shopping plaza in the 2500 block of East Franklin Boulevard.

Tribek Properties owns the property and has hired engineers, who were out Thursday, to inspect the wall and the ground below it.

The ground around the wall had started giving way after the past week or so of heavy rain.

"That is a mess that is getting to be dangerous," said area resident Jennifer Goins, who stopped in a parking lot next door to look up at the wall.
