Motorists must detour off a section of Interstate 70 west in Rostraver for the foreseeable future, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

A supporting wall beneath the road collapsed Tuesday afternoon, initially forcing traffic to be diverted onto the Arnold City exit, down Finley Road and onto state Route 201, according to PennDOT spokeswoman Valerie Petersen.

Motorists then picked up Interstate 70 west by turning left off Route 201.

Petersen, who was at the site Tuesday evening, said traffic appeared to be flowing well along the detour route despite the large number of tractor-trailers that travel the interstate.

PennDOT workers were guiding traffic through the detour and were not allowing traffic to turn onto Pricedale Road, toward Tyrol Boulevard and Monessen.

PennDOT personnel manned the intersections of Route 201 near Tri-County Plaza. Southbound turning lanes on 201 were closed to allow tractor-trailers turning right from Finley Road room to make wide turns.

The situation changed late Tuesday.

Petersen said PennDOT officials realized the potential for traffic congestion.

Contacted late Tuesday, Rostraver Township Commission Chairman Pat Egros said PennDOT had established an alternate detour.

They're taking cars to Route 51 north. From there, they're being directed to Route 201 south to Rankins Corner, and then left onto Route 201 to the Interstate 70 west onramp, Egros said.
