Retaining wall work is set to close two roads in Weymouth

Repairs to the wall retaining Chapelhay Street in Weymouth will start next month.

The works will require the closure of Dorset Terrace and Chapelhay Street for 20 weeks starting Monday 4 November 2013. Wet weather has caused some of the wall to collapse and other parts to move and crack.

Contractors working on behalf of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council have been appointed to: n Demolish the original retaining wall.

n Construct a new reinforced concrete wall topped with brick parapet wall and handrail.

n Reinstate a ramp providing an accessible route to Town Bridge.

The southern footpath along Chapelhay Street and access to Chapelhay Steps will remain open at all times.

The repairs are the second part of a two-phase project to stabilise the Chapelhay Gardens slope, which the borough council is responsible for maintaining.

Repairs to the lower part of the slope were successfully carried out this summer.
