No charges will be filed against a Deadwood man whose wife died Saturday when the golf cart he was driving plunged over a retaining wall in the couples backyard, according to a news release from the Deadwood Police Department.

Gregory Vecchi had blood drawn and tests showed he had no alcohol in his system at the time of the accident, which claimed the life of Monica Beer.

According to the news release, the Deadwood Police Department responded on July 5 to 305 Cliff St. in Deadwood for the golf cart accident. Beer was pronounced dead at the scene. Vecchi was taken to Lead-Deadwood Regional with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators from the police department and the Lawrence County Sheriffs Office concluded that the couple was behind the house where an electrical outlet is located to recharge the golf cart.

Vecchi stated that the golf cart's accelerator got stuck, according to the news release. The golf cart then went over a retaining wall, which was determined to be 7-feet-7-inches high.

Police said the golf cart flipped over and pinned the couple underneath. Vecchi was able to free himself and went across the street to get help. When emergency responders arrived, Beer was found underneath the golf cart and unresponsive.

The preliminary autopsy report indicated that she died from traumatic asphyxiation.
