New Kensington Council on Tuesday awarded a $55,000 contract for the repair of portions of the Constitution Boulevard retaining wall.

City Engineer Tony Males said the work will include repairing about 150 feet of the wall that supports Constitution Boulevard above the railroad tracks. Portions of the wall are crumbling.

One area of particular focus will be near the intersection with Walnut Street, Males said.

Holbein Inc. of Buffalo Township was awarded the contract, which Males said came in under budget.

The Redevelopment Authority of New Kensington allocated about $70,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant money for the work.

Males said he will work with the authority and the contractor to determine whether they can add to the scope of the project to use all of the available funds.

The city completed a similar repair project on the Constitution Boulevard wall in 2010. That work cost about $90,000.

Males said the new repairs will not involve any of the recently repaired areas.
