New effort to be made to deal with leaning wall in Tatamagouche

TRURO Colchester County will be making another attempt at dealing with a retaining wall along the main street of Tatamagouche that is at risk of falling down.

The municipality had initially planned to split the $10,000 cost to remove the wall with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR), provided the Village of Tatamagouche agreed to deal with any future problems that may arise at the site.

That plan was canned, however, when village officials said they were not prepared to assume responsibility for the site, because Tatamagouche does not own the property.

The wall was erected by TIR in 1990 and is on department-owned land that abuts private property.

As a fiscally responsible Commission, chairman Jim Baird wrote in a letter to council, we felt that we were not able to agree to accept any potential future financial burden for a project that we had no decision in, ownership of, or responsibility for.

That position led to Colchester council deciding not to proceed with its earlier agreement with TIR. But county Councillor Mike Gregory, who represents the Tatamagouche area, suggested the issue could be resolved if the municipality simply took the position that it would not be responsible for any future work that may be required at the site, as opposed to putting the onus on the village for that responsibility.

They dont want the county to say the village is responsible after that, Gregory said.

Based on that clarification, council agreed to approach TIR in an effort to proceed with the original plan to cost-share the walls demolition.
