Mayor believes there is not immediate risks to households in the area

Residents living on Snows Drive in Wabush received a letter today stating land near their homes may be considered unsafe under certain conditions.

Breaking News

The Town of Wabush has received complaints concerning the retaining wall on Snows Drive and land moving on the other side of the road for a number of years.

Wabush Mayor Colin Vardy said the council decided it was time to act, and hired a consultant Stantec to look into the problem. After drilling for soil composition of the bank and where it may slide, Stantec reported back their findings to the town, which immediately sent the study to the towns lawyers and internal engineer.

This is something weve only recently discovered, Vardy said. Were letting the residents know in a timely process. This isnt something weve been sitting on.

The six-foot-tall metal retaining wall was installed by a developer without the towns input, Vardy said.

The town did not request to have the wall installed, nor did we issue any permits for it. The wall does not belong to us, nor was it put there by our request.

Vardy added the town is looking into whos accountable and whos responsible to fix it.

We want to protect the residents any way we can and we want to make sure were not accepting responsibility of development which isnt our responsibility.
