An elderly woman escaped serious injury after inadvertently driving her car over a Masterton carpark retaining wall and in to a Chapel St gutter a metre below yesterday.

Firefighters, ambulance officers and police were scrambled to the crash scene near the corner of Chapel and Russell streets shortly after noon and the flow of traffic was briefly slowed as the woman was removed from her vehicle and the site cleared yesterday.

Masterton traffic policing Sergeant Chris Megaw said the woman had mistakenly driven her Mazda Demio vehicle over the top of a metre-high retaining wall and through a hedge in the Warehouse carpark from a space bordering the Chapel St parking area.

"She's come off the carpark and onto the footpath, spun around, and the car's ended up across the gutter."

Mr Megaw said the woman had not received any serious injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital by ambulance for further assessment.

There were no other vehicles involved in the incident, he said.
