In our firms experience, the master bedroom is one of the most desired areas to include in a remodeling project. We estimate that approximately 6 out of 10 clients remodel the master bedroom as part of their renovation, while even more have it on their wish list for a future project.

The master bedroom is a popular remodel because it has become a standard requirement for almost any residence. It also has a directly personal impact on the daily lives of our clients. When done right, the master bedroom can serve as a relaxing retreat to rejuvenate even the most stressed-out homeowner.

As with any remodeling project, there are several ways to approach a master suite remodel. Here are four levels of renovations based on varying budgets.

Level 1

The first level of a master bedroom makeover doesnt involve an architect at all. If you like the size and shape of the room, you can simply spruce it up by upgrading the furniture, bedding and paint. Such upgrades will obviously change the look and feel of the space. New curtains, bedside furniture, or added seating options can also update the design. For the best results, you will need a plan to coordinate the new furnishings and finishes. If you want a professional eye, an interior designer will help you choose a color scheme, coordinate the new elements and find new accessories for the room. You would be amazed how a space can be transformed even if the "bones" remain the same.

Level 2

A level two master bedroom suite remodel would involve a little more muscle and skill. This could still be a do-it-yourself project but it will take more time and definitely more energy. If you still want to work within the rooms footprint but want a more significant change, you can move into remodeling finishes. This level of remodeling in the bedroom involves changing the flooring, trim, interior doors and possibly windows. The master bath is also given a serious facelift. It remains in the same spot and configuration but often it is gutted down to the studs and built up again from scratch. Upgrading the bathroom flooring, cabinetry, countertop, faucets, tile and plumbing fixtures will create a new bathroom in the existing space. Another important part of the master suite is the closet. Adding built-in cabinetry in an existing closet can drastically change its capacity and function.
