Amarillo,TX - Martha's home is remodeling one of its houses to help meet the need of homeless women and children in our area.

Connie Garcia is the executive director Martha's home and she says right now, they are at capacity, but remodeling is necessary.

Right now they are working off of a waiting list and with this house shut down the wait is even longer.

"It is important that we get that house in a livable condition because the need is great. I get literally hundreds of calls from desperate, single, mothers that are staying in there cars doubled up with family members, if they are lucky. Some are literally going to be on the street that day."

ReBath and Five Day Kitchens volunteered to do the remodeling and about five other local businesses are helping with the process.

Henry Wall say almost everything will be donated.

"Everybody that I asked to be involved in this they jumped right on, right away without hesitating. This is a great community we have a lot of great companies that do really good work ... and we all support each other. There is no one company that we feel like is trying to control everything and there is more than enough work to go around and we are happy to be involved in this."

Community is what Garcia says has kept Martha's Home in business for over 25 years.

"We get very little government funding. We are entirely dependent upon the generosity of Amarillo, TX and The Panhandle ... through individuals, through churches, through local foundations. The Panhandle takes care of its own and I'm proud to be apart of that"

They are anticipating the project to be complete by March 29th in time for their second chance prom.
