A number of local car dealers have remodeled their facilities since the economy began improving.

Some of the projects were so-called image upgrades required by manufacturers. Others were done to remain competitive.

One of the largest projects is the approximately $13 million expansion and renovation of Beaverton Toyota-Scion that is nearing completion at 4300 S.W. Murray Blvd. It includes many environmental and customer-friendly features, including LEEDs certification and a comfortable coffee shop and deli in the remodeled waiting area.

Owner Russ Humberston, Jr., notes the environmental features are especially important to buyers of the Toyota Prius hybrid, which is especially popular in the Portland area. A grand opening will soon be scheduled.

The Ron Tonkin Family of Dealerships has remodeled a number of their stores along 122nd Avenue in Portland, including the Chevy and Toyota-Mazda stores. The Chevy store project included the renovation of the iconic Ron Tonkin Chevrolet sign that dates back to 1964, which the franchise moved their from Southwest Barbur Boulevard.

Ron, the company's founder, passed away in January. The company is now run by his sons, Brad and Ed. The Chevy store is managed by Ed's son, Adam.
