Arson Victims Get Help Rebuilding Home
By: Robert PriceTheir dream home went up in flames before they could even finish moving in.A month later, Robert Price spoke to a Southside family about the outpouring of support that they say is getting them through the holidays.Patrick and Elizabeth Smuck are still clearing out belongings to put into storage. It #39;s been more than a month now since arsonists set fire to their home on Big Foot, but they say they #39;re making progress.They know just how far they #39;ve come. A home that once belonged to Elizabeth #39;s mother, they #39;d been remodeling it in the years since her death. The plan was to finally move in by Christmas, but the fire changed everything,After our first story aired last month, a construction company donated 100 man hours. An electrician offered to rewire the house for free. Friends held fundraisers and have been giving them gift cards and cash."Telling us, #39;you don #39;t have to use this for the house, you can use this for your kids for Christmas #39;," said Elizabeth Smuck, holding back tears. "It #39;s unexpected. Just feeling all that love from people, it #39;s awesome. It #39;s an awesome feeling."One of the first big donations after the fire came from a cousin, whose company bought a giant dumpster for Patrick and Elizabeth. At one point overflowing with all sorts of charred debris from inside their house, they #39;ve already had to empty it once.
