The Stockton neighbourhood being filmed for the controversial Benefits Street TV show has been promised a makeover - to make it look better - claim residents.

Families in Kingston Road, Tilery, are being promised new windows, porches, gutters and roof facias as filming continues for the Channel 4 show.

Letters informed 25 households they were being included in a 60m improvement programme.

But many locals claimed it was only being done so the street does not look like a dump on television.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: Someone at the council must have realised that leaving this place as it was reflected badly not on us, but on the whole of Stockton, and the place would look like a dump.

So now we hear that our houses are finally going to get done up.

"Life here has suddenly turned very sweet.

Anyone who thought we were mad to get involved with Benefits Street needs to think again.

Thirteen, the housing association carrying out the work, said the refurbishing had been budgeted and planned several months ago.
