AVON More than a dozen packages have been stolen from porches recently as Christmas approaches.

Avon Police Cpt. Larry Fischbach said thieves are making off with packages throughout the area, and the thefts are not targeted to specific neighborhoods. Package thefts have occurred everywhere from subdivisions to main streets like Detroit Road, he said.

It is random in nature just like car break-ins, he said. This is a random and opportunistic crime that is unfortunately related to the holiday season and increased package deliveries that come with the season.

Last week two Cleveland men,Hermon Toney, 28, and, Jamir Johnson, 22, both of Cleveland, were arrested by Westlake Police, for stealing packages from porches in Westlake. Several packages that had been stolen from two homes in Westlake were found in a Cadillac that the two men were pulled over in.

Toney and Johnson were charged with two counts of theft, three counts of possessing criminal tools and carrying various weapons for a stun gun.

Fischbach said there have been no arrests for the Avon thefts, and there are no suspects at this time. Hesaid people should keep an eye on their neighborhoods and call police if they see anyone they do not recognize walking or driving around neighborhoods and acting suspicious.

He also said those ordering and expecting delivery of packages should try to have them delivered to a location where they know someone will be able to retrieve them.

Anyone with information regarding the thefts should call the Avon Police Department at934-1234.
