Master Plumber Anthony Gennaro, of Tampas Gennaro Plumbing, offers visitors to his website blog a few plumbing tips that could extend the life of a homes pipes in the coming years. Anthony obtained his Certified Master Plumbers License in 2000, which made him the youngest person in the state of Florida to hold this status. His commitment to the familys business has given him a plethora of knowledge regarding plumbing repair.

A lot of people dont know that there are quite a few ways to maintain the health of your plumbing, says Anthony Gennaro, a few small things here and there go a long way.

Tampa Bay area home owners can take advantage of the following tips and tricks from Master Plumber Anthony Gennaro:

Even after a mild Tampa winter, its important to do simple checks on a houses plumbing system to make sure everything is in order. A visual look over can be done very quickly, but can prevent a catastrophe from sneaking up. Look over any piping for cracks or rusting, which can be a telltale sign of leaks at crucial connection points. Once identified, a careful application of plumbers tape can provide a leak-proof seal.

Check bathroom and kitchen faucets for any leaking or dripping. A slowly dripping faucet could easily be fixed by changing its gasket, which is a simple project for any homeowner. Toilets can also be leaky, but are harder to diagnose. Tampa plumber Anthony Gennaro suggests putting a few drops of food dye in the tank to see where the leaking is occurring. Minimizing leaks and drips around the house can save on water bill costs.

Unscrew the strainers on the underside of faucets to make sure there isnt any debris that has been blocking it up. This is especially important for showerheads, since they tend to be a target for mineral deposits. You can soak the showerheads in vinegar overnight if they get jammed up. Afterwards, use an old toothbrush to clear the waterways, suggests Anthony.

Habitual drain cleaning is also very important. Floor drains are another area of home plumbing that can be easily maintained by a homeowner. Pouring water into floor drains can determine if there is a blockage thats inhibiting draining. This can then be remedied by using a common pipe snake to remove the debris that is blocking the waterway. Its important to do this to ensure that drains will work properly in a flooding scenario. Additionally, testing unused drains will fill the traps that prevent odors from spreading into the home.

While these tips will come in handy for anyone with a Do-It-Yourself attitude, its important to know when to call in a professional plumber. Mr. Gennaro says, there are many times where I have had to come in and fix a problem that couldve been easily prevented. On the flip side, there have been cases where I have had to fix something a customer did while trying to fix something else. Some plumbing jobs can be too unwieldy to take on with limited knowledge. Thats when an expert should be called.
