OKLAHOMA CITY -- No one wants to call a plumber on Thanksgiving Day or the day after. As people are cooking dinner Thursday, there are a few things to keep in mind so a plumber doesn't need to unclog the kitchen sink.

There are several things people can do to avoid clogging the sink. The obvious one is to not cram large amount of food down the sink.

Plumbers say there are also other things people can do to not have to call them on their busiest day of the year.

"Usually the disposals don't have much horsepower, you'll find. So the more you shove in there, the less chance it has to handle the amount of stuff that goes in there and it'll short out the disposal to the point that it'll stop working," plumber Anthony Malmo said. "For the most part, it's the food getting clogged up in the drain and your Thanksgiving dinner fills up inside your sink and there's a bunch of water that's not able to go down."

Some of the stuff people shouldn't shove down the drains are pizza, bread and stuffing. They will get clogged easily.

Grapes, cranberries, and smaller items are okay. But the important thing is to make sure water is running while food is being put down the drain to make the water is pulling the food down.

"You notice that we have the water running," Malmo said. "As it's going and we want to run it for a long period of time."

If grease gets into the drain, plumbers say to run cold water.
