A NEIGHBOURHOOD was evacuated after a plumber was bashed and his ute, containing tanks of acetylene, was set alight in Sydney's west this morning.

The plumber was set upon by a two men when he arrived at a house in Mariana Crescent, Lethbridge Park, about 8am today to attend a job.

He was punched and kicked numerous times to the face after he got out of his vehicle and entered the backyard of the home.

The men then set a fire which engulfed the plumbers Toyota Hilux which was at danger of exploding.

Police, as well as firefighters and ambulance paramedics, attended the scene and established a 200 metre exclusion zone and evacuated about 80-100 people from their homes.

A spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW said the cylinders of acetylene in the plumber's vehicle were being cooled, with the process expected to take up to two hours.

Mariana Crescent was closed during the operation.
