A plumber has been bashed and his vehicle set alight, forcing up to 50 people to be evacuated from a street in Sydney's west.

The man had gone to a job at a house in Mariana Crescent, Lethbridge Park, about 8am (AEDT) on Friday.

After he went into the backyard, the plumber was attacked by two men who punched and kicked him in the face numerous times.

They then set a fire which engulfed the plumber's Toyota Hilux.

Police, firefighters and paramedics found the vehicle contained tanks of acetylene.

A 200-metre exclusion zone was established and police evacuated up to 100 people from their homes.

Mariana Crescent is closed and the operation is expected to continue for a number of hours, police say.

The plumber is expected to be taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries.

A spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW said the cylinders of acetylene in the plumber's vehicle were being cooled, with the process expected to take up to two hours.
