COLUMBUS, Ohio Joe the Plumber has lost his bid for a U.S. House seat in Ohios 9th District, Fox News projects.

He was first thrust into the spotlight during the 2008 presidential campaign, when he questioned then-candidate Barack Obama about his small business tax policies. That, followed by several shout-outs from U.S. Senator John McCain during the presidential debate.

Wurzelbacher was celebrated among Republicans, who encouraged his running for Congress.

In the end, he lost out to the longest-serving Democratic woman in the House, Kaptur, who handily defeated fellow Democrat Dennis Kucinich in a primary earlier this year.

CNN contributed to this report.
