A homeless man led police from Newark into Hayward after he allegedly stole a plumber's van in Fremont last week, authorities said.

Fremont police reported a plumber's work van was stolen around 5 a.m. Thursday in the 46800 block of Crawford Street, Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

Around 5:25 a.m. a Newark police officer spotted the vehicle and followed it onto northbound Interstate Highway 880 into Hayward, Newark police said.

Another Newark officer responded along with the California Highway Patrol and forced the driver to stop around Harder and Soto roads in Hayward.

The driver, identified as Steven Ferea, a 39-year-old Hayward transient with connections to Stockton, was taken into custody, Bosques said.

Bosques said Ferea was booked on vehicle theft charges and a possible probation violation.
