Ticks and mosquitoes arent just a nuisance, they can also be dangerous. When they bite people and animals they transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, West Nile Virus, Heartland virus, babesiosis, and dengue fever. To make things worse, these pests have growing populations due to increasing rain and warmer temperatures.

Senske Services' Pest Control division wants to help to lower the number of bites by keeping homeowners up-to-date on prevention methods. The company follows the National Pest Management Associations recommendations for insect bite protection.

1. Protect Your Skin: Always use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when spending time in areas where ticks and mosquitoes hang out. Its also a good ideas to wear long sleeves, long pants, and light colors.

2. Conduct A Daily Check For Ticks: Ticks can be removed with tweezers. But first they have to be found. To the naked eye, ticks will appear to be about the size of a poppy seed. Its important to find them as soon as possible after outdoor activity to keep any possible disease from spreading.

3. Protect Pets from Exposure: It isnt always easy to control pets when theyre out for a stroll. But when walking a dog or cat, it is a good idea to avoid areas of tall grass. After they return from walk in areas where ticks have been found, pets should be inspected for ticks.

4. Inspect Your Property: Protect yards from mosquitoes by eliminating standing water, which mosquitoes use to breed. In addition, keep outdoor play areas and patios away from shrubs and brushes where mosquitoes also tend to congregate. Taking simple steps such as placing wood chips between the lawn and wooded areas can help to deter ticks.

Senske Services promotes the idea that homeowners can continue to enjoy the warm summer days while also protecting themselves from potentially dangerous bites from ticks and mosquitoes. While Senske does not treat for mosquitoes, the company does treat for ticks.
