A pest control order for foxes has been introduced in NSW, forcing pet owners to obtain a permit.

Cover your ears Fantastic Mr Fox - because foxes have been declared pests in NSW.

A pest control order for foxes has been introduced for the first time in the state, forcing pet owners to obtain a permit.

Local Land Services will co-ordinate a control scheme, allowing private land holders to bait or shoot the furry animals in localised campaigns.

Primary Industries minister Katrina Hodgkinson says the order means no new foxes can be acquired.

"Foxes are not companion animals. This pest control order sends the clear message that they are pests, not pets," she said in a statement.

Foxes cost the Australian environment and economy around $227.5 million, primarily because of the damage they cause for livestock producers, she said.
