Cumbrian pest control firms have seen double the number of call outs to tackle wasps nests this summer.

Homeowners desperate to rid their homes and gardens of the black and yellow peril have kept pest controllers busy across the county.

Cumbria Pest and Hygiene Services say call outs to blitz the nests have risen by 100 per cent compared to last year.

Karen Law, of the Cockermouth-based firm, said: Weve seen on average between 15 and 20 wasps nests per week this summer. Normally its seven to 10.

Two successive mild winters and a warm summer could be to blame for an increase in the insects according to experts.

But spells of hot weather this summer have also brought people out into the sunshine.

Mrs Law said: People are having a nice barbecue in the garden and they notice a massive wasps nest.

The size of wasps nests being reported has also increased this year.
