DETROIT, MI - Pest control company Orkin has releases tis annual list of the 50 most bed bug-ridden cities, and Detroit takes the number two spot, behind Chicago

While an apparent proliferation of bed bugs is bad for those of us that find them in our homes, it has been a boon for Orkin's parent company, Rollins: The company said it saw a 33 percent increase in its bed bug eradication business last year.

Detroit moved up one spot from third place on Orkins annual list of the worst infested cities, which can be seen below.

Bed bugs thrive on human blood. Their infestation can result in rashes or allergic reactions.

People often associate them with bedrooms, no doubt because of their name, but they can be found in any part of the house, and sanitation or a lack thereof has nothing to do with their arrival.

"Education and prevention are key," Orkins in-house entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison , Ph.D, said in a release. "Inspect your bedroom regularly, and be cautious when traveling. Adult bed bugs resemble apple seeds in size and color, while newly-hatched babies can be about the size of a pinhead and pale in color. Check mattress seams, sheets and furniture, behind baseboards, electrical outlet plates and picture frames."

The top ten worst cities for bed bugs, according to Orkin:

1. Chicago (+1)

2. Detroit (+1)

3. Los Angeles (+2)
