According to the City & Country Pest Control experts, unlike termites that damage structures by actually consuming wood, carpenter ants damage wood by removing debris and creating galleries and tunnels. A carpenter ant colony is made up of smooth tunnels that appear well-sanded, with the sawdust cleared out.

Carpenter ants may prefer moist, decaying wood, but theyll still set up a colony in any non-decaying wood structure.

But they do leave signs; because carpenter ants excavate their nests, they often leave behind a telltale pile of sawdust, according to the experts at City & Country Pest Control.

City & Country Pest Control points out that homeowners can also tell when a carpenter ant nest is located indoors if they discover a number of mating, winged ants trapped inside. Finding them can also give an approximate location of the colony.
