City & Country Pest Control (http://www.CityandCountryPestControl.com), the leader in residential, industrial, and commercial pest eradication and humane wildlife and bird removal, announces its top tips for avoiding carpenter ants this summer.

Carpenter ants, the Greater Toronto Areas number one structure-invading ant, not only get in the way of enjoying the backyard, but their presence is also usually indicative of wood decay, say the experts at City & Country Pest Control. While carpenter ants do not pose a threat to human health, they can establish nests in rotten or decaying wood, costing families tens of thousands of dollars in structural damage.

According to the City & Country Pest Control experts, unlike termites that damage structures by actually consuming wood, carpenter ants damage wood by removing debris and creating galleries and tunnels. A carpenter ant colony is made up of smooth tunnels that appear well-sanded, with the sawdust cleared out.

At City & Country Pest Control, we want to help home and property owners to be aware of carpenter ants and offer the following expert advice, says Horacio Parreira, owner of City & Country Pest Control. Carpenter ants may prefer moist, decaying wood, but theyll still set up a colony in any non-decaying wood structure.

Because carpenter ant nests are usually well-hidden (inside doors, windowsills, wall voids, etc.), they can be difficult to find. But they do leave signs; because carpenter ants excavate their nests, they often leave behind a telltale pile of sawdust, according to the experts at City & Country Pest Control.

City & Country Pest Control points out that homeowners can also tell when a carpenter ant nest is located indoors if they discover a number of mating, winged ants trapped inside. Finding them can also give an approximate location of the colony.

Finding a carpenter ant nest can be tricky. But getting rid of carpenter ants altogether is a different matter. Thats because a carpenter ant colony can consist of a number of satellite nests, and they are also prolific breeders," Parreira adds. "As a result, a carpenter ant infestation can be extremely difficult to remove. The experienced pest management team at City & Country Pest Control can help locate and eliminate all carpenter ants and recommend proactive approaches to reduce the risks of further carpenter ant infestations.
