Call Your Portland Pest Control Now! Carpenter ants are among the largest of their kind with maximum sizes of up to a half-inch for the workers and an inch for the winged queen ants. These ants usually have black or red-and-black colorations for the workers. To the untrained eye, carpenter ants are like termites but there are significant differences in appearance and damage to manmade structures. Carpenter ants have dark-colored bodies with narrow waists coupled with bent antennae and front wings longer than the hind wings. Termites have light-colored bodies with no waist constriction coupled with straight antennae and equal-length wings. Carpenter ants live in moist wood but do not actually eat it. Termites, in contrast, eat the wood in manmade structures and in forests. Like all ants, carpenter ants live in highly structured societies complete with castes including workers, males and queens. Such structure is necessary for the colonies to survive and thrive. Carpenters do not eat wood but instead remove wood to create their tunnels and galleries.
