Peter Taylor General Manager of Adams Pest Control - a South Melbourne based company that specialises in the elimination of insects and pests, says that summer months sees an increase in parties within the family home, lunch and dinners that take place inside and outside all events that allow pests and insects the opportunity to invade the family backyard and home.

Mr Taylor says there are simple ways to avoid particular insects and rodents entering your property, Keep all food preparation and storage areas clean, if food is spilt - clean it up immediately, do not allow food scraps to enter kitchen drains, and make sure you regularly clean grease traps and drains.

The main summertime culprits due to poor food hygiene and incorrect preparation are Rats and mice Mr Taylor says.

Rats and mice are called domestic rodents as they are closely linked with humans, as they supply their three basic needs: food, shelter, and water. Rats and mice also have poor sight with an excellent sense of taste and smell and have large teeth which allow them to chew through lead, aluminum, cardboard and wood. They may also chew on electrical cables, which have the potential to cause fires.

Rats and mice carry bacteria including those that cause typhus, salmonella and ringworm. They spread disease by feeding and urinating on stored products, and contaminate food with their droppings. Said Mr Taylor. At least 20 per cent of the world's food is eaten or contaminated by rats and mice each year.

Along with rats and mice - flies, cockroaches and ants all carry bacteria which can also contaminate food. In being proactive this summer, its vital you follow the basic cleaning and food tips as it can become quite annoying when the pesky insects and rodents enter the home.

If the rodents or insects have become a bigger problem that cannot be eliminated without specialist help, Mr Taylor suggests contacting a pest control service immediately.

You can be proactive over the summer months to ensure your home stays insect free, however if you do find your home has been invaded by the unwelcome pests, make sure you contact a pest control service immediately to avoid potential damage to your home.
