A spate of burglaries in a number of villages in the Cambridge are has seen thieves smash through patio doors and climb through windows.

There were five burglaries and one attempted break-in last night in Knapwell and Papworth, with the majority of offences happening between 8pm and midnight.

Electrical goods and cash are being targeted by offenders.

Pc Andy Bates said: There were six crimes last night in two villages and they happened when people were out in the evening.

We would urge residents to keep a lookout for suspicious activity, but there are also measures you can take to protect your own home.

Unless patio doors are fitted with a multi-lock system it is best to fit additional locks. They should be fitted on the bottom of the fixed frame at the centre, and on the side frame at the opening point at the top of the door.

You can fix blocks or anti-lift devices to prevent doors being lifted off their track. It is also worth considering reinforced glass when replacing or changing patio door units, as this will give a much greater resistance to attack. Patio door locking bars are also available to improve security.
